LFAM with high performance materials – Choosing the right PAEK for an aerospace mould

Patrick Consul is the topic field lead for machine design & automation in composites production at the Chair of Carbon Composites of the Technical University of Munich where he’s been working on his PhD in large scale additive manufacturing since 2017.

His research focus is on process induced material behavior in large format additive manufacturing of high performance polymers for aerospace applications with use-cases of previous projects as tooling for companies like Saab Aerostructures and GKN Aerospace. This has led him to work on topics along the entire process from material selection through integrating new sensors and actuators in machines, design for AM, machine programming to quality assurance. This overview from material science through machine & process design to application gives him a deep understanding of the challenges LFAM is facing on it’s way to industrial applications. After a short stay at KraussMaffei Technologies as System Engineer he is now back at TUM working on a spin off tackling quality assurance in LFAM to enable the production of end use parts.

There is also a video of him speaking about some of the applications at TUM on CEAD’s Youtube channel.
